World Binturong Day at DEW Haven
At DEW Haven | Maine Zoo & Rescue, we are proud to celebrate World Binturong Day and shine a light on one of the most unique and often overlooked species in the animal kingdom.
Binturongs—sometimes called “bearcats”—are arboreal mammals native to Southeast Asia. Despite their playful personalities and unmistakable popcorn-like scent, wild populations are facing serious challenges.
🌏 Binturongs in the Wild
Binturongs are currently classified as Vulnerable, with populations declining due to:
Deforestation and habitat loss
The illegal wildlife trade
Fragmentation of forest ecosystems
As seed dispersers, binturongs play an important role in maintaining healthy forests—making their conservation critical not just for the species, but for entire ecosystems.
Our Role in Conservation
DEW Haven is actively contributing to binturong conservation through ongoing collaboration with ABConservation.
Through this work, we are helping to support research and conservation efforts aimed at protecting binturongs in the wild and better understanding their needs.
How You Can Help Wild Binturongs
Real conservation work is happening in the field—and you can be part of it.
